Tatura Hot Bread, Tatura

An audible gasp, a look of disbelief….applause….what a delivery! After dismissing a couple of vanilla slices in the wake of the Beechworth Beauty, we were desperate for something special. A month had passed but there had been no runs scored in our test. Then instead of another duck came this – the back to back, Grand Champion of The 2006 & 2007 Great Australian Vanilla Slice Triumph, professional section. Currently rated Australia’s Slice of Perfection, and rightly so. The custard and pastry were perfect; a sweet, soft, eggy vanilla cream sandwiched between wood fired crisp, unsweetened buttery pastry and topped off with a meltingly soft, sticky icing. The runs were back on the board and we instead, had been bowled clean over. Sensational!

  1. My goodness where is Tatura?! Never heard of that place.

  2. Tatura is a town 17 km west-south-west of Shepparton in Victoria, Australia. The name of the town is an Aboriginal word meaning “small lagoon”. The area is particularly verdant making it known for it’s fine dairy produce, cereals, fruit, vegetables and cattle. It is apparently also where Rosella used to produce their famous tomato sauce.

The bakery has an old traditional wood fired oven and they also serve prize winning sponge rolls, white bread rolls, ciabiatta and vegetarian pasties.

  3. Will you still be posting on this blog? I really enjoy it 🙂

  4. Thanks Marina! There is a brand new post on the Woodend Bakery Cafe, with two more in the pipeline. The next will be from Browns Bakeries…stay tuned.

  5. Get To Kyabram Bakery Allan St. I eat them all the time and it’s the best one I have had and I have had Tatura’s on numerous occassions as I live twenty minutes drive from either bakery.

  6. Any chance of the review of the Vanilla Slice from the Eaglehawk Bakery, definitely one of my favourites. Also Country Cakes in Bendigo do a good one.
