Bourkies Bakehouse, Woodend

Forty five minutes from Melbourne, a frisson of excitement arose amongst the Custard Collective in Woodend. At the end of the main drag, the wall outside Bourkies Bakehouse touted ‘Award winning Vanilla Slices’ but the swaggering brag wall of baking trophies showed nothing less than three years old. I smelt a rat. Sadly this vanilla slice didn’t cut the custard. Taking it from the top: sickly, leathery icing available in vanilla, passionfruit and ADHD strawberry; Masonite strong pastry and serviceable custard. Big anticlimax - left us scuttling up the hill for a palate cleansing beer-paddle sampler at Keatings Hotel.

Love the use of the heart for rating these fantastic glutinous yellow masses of goo. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love them, dare I say, to death. Being part of the custard collective gives a sense of purpose and boundless excitement to what once were aimless wanderings through the countryside in search of who knows what. One now has to remember to have a fully charged camera along for the ride to ensure that these delicacies, once discovered, are captured not only for their (one lives and hopes) wonderous texture and flavours, but for their photographic magnifcence as so wonderfully captured in this blog. May the Custard Collective continue to search the cake shops of this world for their Holy Grail. The perfect Vanilla slice. Hurrah!!!
